Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised as an only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a graduate of The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. Along with two job opportunities, Scott was also a teacher at Temple University. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. However, she was not able to achieve the dream after studying for three years and becoming a teaching assistant in college, she decided to leave. A poet by trade started performing, she was able to perform in poetry performances live. She later teamed with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form the group. The two ended up working together in writing You Got Me. She came out during a Roots concert. Later, she secured collaborations artists such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience as an actor in the Canada stage of the Broadway musical Rent. She was the first artist signed with Hidden Beach Recordings.
